Hassan Sharif
Emirati, 1951-2016
Hassan Sharif was a founding member of the Emirates Fine Arts Society and of the Art Atelier in the Youth Theatre and Arts, Dubai. In addition to his own markedly experimental practice, he was also a mentor to many artists in the UAE and the region. In addition to his recent posthumous retrospective at the Sharjah Art Foundation, I Am the Single Work Artist (2017), his most significant solo exhibition, Hassan Sharif Experiments and Objects 1979-2011 (2011), took place at Qasr Al Hosn in Abu Dhabi. He began exhibiting in the 1970s, including Caricature (1976) at the Central Public Library. His work has been collected by and displayed in major museums worldwide, and featured in many biennials, including the 2017 Venice Biennial, the inaugural UAE Pavilion at the Venice Biennial in 2009, and seven Sharjah Biennials, three of which were solo exhibitions (1995, 2001, 2003).
In 2018, Sharif’s work featured in Artists and the Cultural Foundation: The Early Years, at Abu Dhabi’s Cultural Foundation.
