Emirati, b. 1956, Dubai

Najat Makki obtained her BA and MFA in Relief Sculpture and Metal from the College of Fine Arts in Cairo, where she also received her PhD in Philosophy of Art in 2001. She was the first Emirati woman to be awarded a government scholarship to study art abroad (1977). Her works have been exhibited internationally and extensively. Highlights include the Beijing International Biennial (China, 2016); ADMAF’s Portrait of a Nation (Abu Dhabi, 2016; Berlin, 2017); National Pavilion UAE, Venice Biennial (Italy, 2015); The Luxor International Symposium of Photography (Egypt, 2014); China International Sculpture Symposium (China, 2008); Emaar International Arts Symposium (Dubai, 2004); Book Fair Exhibition, Frankfurt (Germany 2004); Sharjah Archaeological Museum (Sharjah, 2003); Tehran Biennial (Iran, 2002); Woman & Arts International Exhibition (Sharjah, 2000) and the Al Mahaba Biennial (Syria, 1999).

In 2018, the artist participated in Artists and the Cultural Foundation: The Early Years, Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation. Najat Makki’s solo show Luminescence was presented at the re-opening of the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation in 2019, occupying all ground-floor galleries in a historic retrospective.
