Shamsa Al Dhaheri is an Emirati artist born in 1995 in Abu Dhabi, where she currently lives and works. She graduated from New York University Abu Dhabi in 2017 with a bachelor’s in Visual Arts and a double minor in Film and New Media as well as Social Research and Public Policy. Her photography work titled Veil Series (2015) was displayed in the exhibitions The Big Picture, Dubai, Portrait of a Nation, Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi, and Portrait of a Nation, Berlin, Germany. She won the ADMAF Visual Arts Award in 2015. Al Dhaheri completed the Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artists Fellowship (SEAF) in 2019. Her most recent exhibition was in 2019 as part of the SEAF graduating show, where she began her research in abundancy and waste in the context of socio-culture in the UAE. Her recent projects explore the architectural landscape of the UAE in parallel to the rapid developments of the country. Observing how spaces are/aren’t used, Al Dhaheri began to notice a lack of space efficiency resulting in a lot of land wasted or used poorly with no real purpose of functionality, simply for the purposes of exuding luxury, wealth and status. She continued her research during her residency at Abu Dhabi’s Cultural Foundation, which she completed in 2020.
