Emirati, b. 1951, Dubai

Abdul Qader Al Rais received his Bachelor’s degree in Sharia Law from the UAE University in Al Ain and developed his artistic practice independently. His first solo exhibition was in the Dubai Public Library in 1974. During the following decade he stopped painting, though he co-founded the Emirates Fine Arts Society. He renewed his practice in 1986. In that same year he began developing the abstract style for which he is now renowned.

He went on to win numerous awards, including several here at the Cultural Foundation in its 1988-89 Spring Exhibitions. His vast exhibition history includes numerous appearances regionally and internationally, notably a retrospective at the Institut du Monde Arabe (2018, Paris, France), a retrospective at the Sharjah Art Museum (2012), inclusion in the UAE Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennial (2015) and a 1995 award at the Latakia Biennial (Syria). His work has been extensively collected, including by the British Museum (London) and numerous museums throughout the Gulf.

In 2018, the artist participated in Artists and the Cultural Foundation: The Early Years, Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation.
