Wrestling Match, The Wrestler

Wrestling has been a popular folk game among Arabs since ancient times. It would be played by boys in the past in open areas (baraha) without any specific rules or instructions. The game doesn’t require more than a sandy space that

doesn’t cause harm to the players and that can accommodate spectators. The wrestling ring is a circle drawn on the floor by a boy chosen by the group as a referee. How wrestling is played: In an atmosphere of action and excitement, two players enter the circle and lock hands, each trying to throw the other to the ground. The players usually stand with their feet apart so as not to lose their balance1.

The game continues until one of the players manages to knock the other down and becomes the winner. The general exciting atmosphere of the game arises from the shouts of the spectators, the players’ enthusiasm, and the winner’s pride and joy. Then the game is then played between different players or between the winner and another player. Finally, a competition is held between the winners of the previous rounds to determine the winner among them. This game has many positive aspects, as it helps boys overcome their fears, allows them to acquire flexibility in movement and strengthens them physically.

It is also useful for preparing boys on how to deal with emergency situations, behave well, and exhibit good sportsmanship. Although the game may sometimes get rough, it does not impact the spirit of brotherhood and honest competition. Wrestling is played for fun and if it sometimes develops into an actual conflict or fight, others intervene and prevent any negative behaviour. This game requires strength, proper posture and balance. The players should be of a similar age and physical build.2
