Spreading the Word

LISTEN TO THIS PAGE
An initiative to introduce books from around the world to Arabic readers
Kalima (‘word’ in Arabic), is an initiative by the National Library of Abu Dhabi to support the Arabic translation, publication and distribution of high-quality literature, history, science and other books originally published in foreign languages.

The initiative brings together authors, translators, publishers and distributors to make a wide range of books available to readers in Arabic. Kalima aims to translate and publish approximately 100 titles a year.

Kalima also plays a major role in identifying quality publishing houses, improving the marketing and distribution of translated titles, and investing in the skills of new Arabic translators to ensure the sustainability of the initiative.

The ultimate goal for Kalima is to help build a stronger Arabic book industry through a focus on key objectives that include supporting and developing the regional book translation industry, encouraging the reading of books in Arabic, and promoting scientific research in the Arab world by providing translations of the latest international publications in various fields.
