A Transcultural Perspective on Modern and Contemporary Art

LISTEN TO THIS PAGE
This museum of modern and contemporary art will be a dynamic platform for presenting local, regional and international art
A museum of modern and contemporary art, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will showcase the most important international artistic achievements of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi collection features the work of artists from across the globe in a variety of mediums produced since the turn of the 1960s. With a special emphasis on West Asian, North African and South Asian art, it responds to the interconnected nature of today’s art world, where cross-cultural sources of inspiration and transcultural exchange have become the norm.

Commissions created for the collection and the exceptional spaces of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will reflect the museum’s commitment to working with artists and supporting contemporary artistic production. To complement the collection, a dynamic programme of special exhibitions will explore the careers of individual artists and the histories of art movements, as well as common themes and affinities among the work of artists across time and place.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will serve as a forum for scholarly research and intellectual and cultural dialogue, engaging artists, scholars, curators, architects and innovative thinkers. A range of educational programmes will provide the public with multidisciplinary perspectives on the collection and exhibitions, as well as a deeper understanding of modern and contemporary artistic practices.

Located on Saadiyat Island, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be part of the Saadiyat Cultural District, an emerging global cultural hub that houses a world-class concentration of museums, galleries and performing art venues.

The museum will offer spectacular views of the Arabian Gulf, which will surround it on three sides. Its inventive design by award-winning architect Frank Gehry features a series of asymmetric cones that surround the main building and act as both entrances to the museum and exterior exhibition spaces.

The design of the cone-like structures that encircle the museum were inspired by the region's traditional wind towers, giving a local touch to the museum’s form.
