Overview

Cuadro Fine Art Gallery will present artworks by Camille Zakharia for this exhibition. While the photographic collage works initially appear fluid and abstract, upon close reflection, subtle patterns composed of specific signifiers and symbols begin to emerge on the surface, reflecting the artist’s itinerary journey away from his native land, and his attempt to find harmony within the boundaries of places he calls Home.

The complex works are composed of a multitude of layers of photographic images taken of painted asphalt. The colours, lines, and textures of these objects are ripped apart, to the extent that they lose their original meaning and become barely recognisable. The artist then uses these remnants to create fluid abstractions imbued with a new set of meanings. The collages are often intentionally unplanned, offering the artist a path for meditation and self-exploration.

Artists Biography
Camille Zakharia graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from NSCAD University Halifax Canada in 1997 and a Bachelor of Engineering from the American University of Beirut in 1985.

Using photography, photomontage and collage, Zakharia focusses on identity and displacement, reflecting his own life journey. He sees collage as a means of expressing a fragmented identity and for reassembling memories.

Zakharia has exhibited across North America, Europe and the Middle East, including Venice Biennale, Victoria & Albert Museum, Canadian Museum of Civilization, FotoFest 2014, Musee du Quai Branly, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Wichita Center for the Arts, Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, Chobi Mela, Sharjah Biennale and National Museum of Bahrain.

Zakharia’s works are in public collections including LACMA, Canadian Museum of Civilization, Victoria and Albert Museum, Musee Suisse de l’Appareil Photographique, Wichita Center for the Arts, National Museum of Bahrain, Barjeel Art Foundation, and Art Gallery at Saint Mary’s University.

Cuadro Fine Art Gallery
Founded in 2008, Cuadro Fine Art Gallery, located in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), maintains four keys areas of focus: exhibitions, education, residency and consultation. Cuadro’s exhibitions provide audiences with an opportunity to discover leading contemporary artists through thoughtfully curated shows. These exhibitions are enhanced by the Cuadro Education Program, which is comprised of lectures, workshops and panel discussions.

The artists, both local and international, are often also provided the opportunity to exhibit the work they have created at the Gallery. Cuadro provides qualified art consultation services for its discerning collectors, building on and enhancing existing collections, as well as helping establish new ones. Through these initiatives, Cuadro continues its commitment to dynamically engage and add value to both local and international art communities.
