Guggenheim Abu Dhabi’s Visiting Artist Programme 2022:

"An offer from the desert" by Kabir Mohanty

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi’s Visiting Artist Programme is an initiative that brings collection artists to Abu Dhabi to share their artistic practice to university students and the general public. The programme may culminate in the presentation of artworks, performances, or panel discussions, providing the public with enriching experiences through a variety of artist-led interactions while also expanding general knowledge of and interest in contemporary art.

For this year’s programme, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi invited collection artist Kabir Mohanty. The artist developed An offer from the desert, a project which consists of a series of nine masterclasses on sound art, and a presentation of a proposed installation featuring the sound pieces produced by the participants during the masterclasses. From 8th December, 2022 to 31st January, 2023 at the Abu Dhabi Creative Hub, you will get a chance to listen to the sound pieces, along with a showcase of objects related to the sound installation envisioned by the artist.

In collaboration with Abu Dhabi Creative Hub, under the Umbrella of the Ministry of Culture and Youth.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kabir Mohanty (b. 1960, Peshawar, Pakistan; lives and works in Mumbai) completed his graduate studies in film and video at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1986, and was tutored under film theorist Dudley Andrew as well as experimental filmmaker Leighton Pierce, whose use of sound was pivotal for the development of Mohanty’s practice.

Since 1990, Mohanty has been making films, and has pursued more ambitious experiments with sound and video. His keen interest in sound has been further catalyzed by his long-time collaboration with sound engineer and designer Vikram Joglekar. Since 2001, he has also been creating sound and video installations. Their interactive sound installation In Memory (2009/12) is a mixture of natural and technological elements and is part of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi collection.
